IN THEIR FIRST YEAR
Pawpaw seedlings benefit from the energy of sunlight,
but just don't like too much UV.

IN THEIR SECOND YEAR
they will be fine in full sun.

IF PLANTED OUT IN THE GROUND
Until they go dormant, provide them with partial shade, as from nearby trees, or a structure that also allows air circulation, such as a tomato cage partly covered in cheesecloth or poly film.

EXCESS UV
will show up as brown, sunburned leaves.
T
ubular “tree shelters” are not recommended since they produce humid conditions that promote fungus, as do thick weeds growing close to young trees. Pawpaw trees don't mind heat, as long as they have plenty of water.

We call these little trees "New" because this is their first year from seed.

We call them "Superior" because they are grown from seed of Pawpaw trees bearing good fruit.

These low~priced trees represent a wide range of Pawpaw genetics.

  • All Pawpaw trees bear flowers which are both male and female, but they do not normally self~pollinate, so two genetically distinct trees are usually needed for fruit. Any two of these Superior Seedling Pawpaw Trees could cross-pollinate and produce fruit.
  • Pawpaw trees send up root sprouts, and in time a single tree may form an extensive patch of genetically identical trees. This may explain the non-fruiting Pawpaw patches which are sometimes found in the wild. Planting new Pawpaw trees in the patch may thus result in fruit bearing.
  • If grown in full sun, pawpaw trees will have a broad, pyramidal shape.
  • They also grow in partial shade but tend to be taller and less productive.

Since they come in containers, they can be planted any time during the growing season.

Pawpaw trees should not be planted while dormant.

You may overwinter them where they will be cold, but not freezing, and plant out next Spring.
  • Pawpaw trees should only be planted while they are actively growing, not while dormant. This is because their roots also go dormant along with the tops, and are thus unable to heal from injuries to the roots.
  • They like plenty of mulch and water, with good drainage, and a slightly acid soil high in organic matter.
  • Complete Seed~to~Fruit Growing Instructions are sent with each order.
  • Our trees are grown without synthetic pesticides, and we use all natural materials in the soil mix, along with some chemical fertilizer.

PLEASE NOTE:

Our little Pawpaw trees are only shipped during the growing season.
